October is here with all its excitement! Whether you’re putting out jack-o-lanterns or finding the perfect costume, it’s fun to get into the spooky spirit this time of year. That said, some scares aren’t very amusing and poor dental health is one of them. The festive fall spirit happens to coincide with Dental Hygiene Awareness month, which means there’s no better time than now to share information that’s bound to send shivers down your spine. Keep reading to learn a few terrifying statistics in honor of the season!

Disturbing Decay

Are you aware that a whopping 18% of children aged 5 to 19 years old have at least one cavity in their baby teeth that’s gone untreated? As concerning as that may be, it pales in comparison to the 91% of adults between 20 to 64 years old who have untreated cavities in their permanent teeth. This is problematic because cavities don’t resolve themselves and only worsen with time. The decay can spread to the surrounding teeth and through the roots into your jawbone. This leaves them weakened and more vulnerable to injury or falling out altogether.

Fortunately, cavities are incredibly preventable. They form when acids from bacteria and the foods that we eat wear away the protective enamel and allow bacteria to penetrate your tooth. Consistently brushing twice a day removes plaque buildup and germs that contribute to decay so you don’t have to worry.

Grim Gum Disease

Periodontal disease is a prevalent problem affecting more than 47% of adults aged 30 or older, and over 70% of adults 65 years or older. Yikes! Your gums are just as important for your oral well-being as your pearly whites because they carry nutrients to your mouth so that everything remains healthy and can function effectively. They also support your teeth and hold them in place. Unfortunately, however, gum disease is reported to be the number one leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Gum disease is hard to detect because you don’t see signs until it has already advanced. That’s why it’s often called the “silent” disease. To prevent it, include flossing with your twice-daily dental hygiene regimen to ensure that unwanted microbes are cleared from around your teeth and below your gumline.

If you’re frightened by these facts, schedule a checkup with your dentist. It’s the best way to ensure your teeth are professionally cleaned and monitored so that any areas of concern can be addressed sooner rather than later. That way you’ll keep your mouth in good shape so you don’t have to be scared of dental dilemmas this fall!
