7 Dental Myths

We loved the Mythbusters, back when it was on the Discovery Channel. The entire show was focused around dispelling commonly believed myths! Well, there are many myths that people believe about their teeth, which just aren’t true! And we are going to bust some of these.

  1. Flossing will make space between your teeth.

We have heard people say that flossing will make more space between your teeth. This is not true at all! On the contrary, it will keep your teeth from decaying, which will keep your teeth more evenly spaced. When you first start to floss you may notice that your gums could start to bleed. But after a few weeks of flossing this should stop. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, then we would recommend talking to your dentist since this could be a sign of gum disease.


  1. You only need to visit the dentist if your teeth hurt

Even if people don’t say this out loud, this is how many people act. This is the opposite of the truth! It is much easier to diagnose and fix an issue before it develops into a severe problem, then wait until it hurts. Visiting the dentist regularly will not only keep your mouth cleaner but also they will spot anything that could turn into a problem and will fix it. Even if your teeth are perfectly healthy, we recommend visiting the dentist at least twice a year for checkups.


  1. Baby teeth don’t matter

While it is partially true that baby teeth might not matter as much as adult teeth, it is false that they don’t matter at all. Baby teeth guide the adult teeth in and help to space your teeth so they grow evenly and straight. If a baby tooth gets a cavity and goes untreated, it could be lost much earlier and this could cause a space for an extended period of time. This makes it more likely for your teeth to grow in poorly. If you don’t have your child take care of their baby teeth, then the chances are they won’t take care of their adult teeth.


  1. It doesn’t matter when I brush

We recommend brushing your teeth at least a couple of times per day. But the time when you brush your teeth does actually affect your oral health. At night, your mouth doesn’t create as much saliva, which throughout the day helps clean your teeth. People that have dry mouth actually have more cavities, because they don’t have saliva helping to clean their mouth. That means if you don’t brush your teeth before bed, the food particles and bacteria will sit on your teeth all night.


  1. Diet sodas aren’t hard on your teeth.

While it is true that diet sodas don’t have sugar in them, which causes cavities, they are still acidic. Our mouths have bacteria that love to eat acid, and this will help form cavities. The acid in diet drinks will eat at the enamel of your teeth and this can cause serious issues over time. This is especially true for those that sip soda through the day. It takes roughly 20 minutes for your mouth to neutralize the acid from a drink and each time you drink an acidic drink this timer restarts.


  1. My Teeth Don’t affect the rest of my body

Your oral health is closely tied to the rest of your body. Many people don’t know this and think that oral health isn’t that important. If you have severe tooth decay, it is much more likely that bacteria will enter into your blood steam and could cause health issues. Your oral health is linked to the rest of your health, and that is why it is important to take care of your oral health.


  1. My teeth are unhealthy because of my age

Older age does not mean that your teeth will automatically be unhealthy. If you take care of your teeth during the rest of your life, they will still be healthy in your senior years. This means that if you are young, you won’t necessarily have good oral health. You need to have good oral hygiene practices throughout your entire life if you want to have healthy teeth. It is important to establish good oral health habits early.
